Hey cool, I was waiting for some Microsoft employees to spread light on the subject :)

I have to say though, I don't think it was ever Yahoo's intention to compete with Microsoft. I think MS just wants to buy up Yahoo in the hopes of one day squashing Google.

Yahoo didn't like their first offer, so it seems like they're flirting with MS for a better one. But Ballmer basically told them "how 'bout we just shove the first offer up your nose and buy you out instead?" (I'm paraphrasing here)

I'm thinking that Microsoft, not unlike Stalin, wants to grab Yahoo so they can compete with Google, and one day with their newly found and beefed up web presence, they can send their secret police to comment on every blog to help maintain social submission and corporate allegiance. The can then move on to buy out Google to create the ultimate (and only) search engine/online advertising conglomerate.

MS is just ticked that the top dog for online search and advertising is someone other than Microsoft, and they'd like to change it. All hail Tsar Gates! :D

"just retire already and let someone else own a business for once."

In other words, the losers just can't compete with Microsoft and Stalinists like you want the government to step in.
