Socom Map Packs Working on My PS3

A little update on my favorite pass-time. I was FINALLY able to get the Socom Combined Assault Map Packs working with my PlayStation 3. You’d think that the big hard drive would someday prove useful to somebody, but in the meantime, I was able to get these stupid map packs working ONLY on my iPod. Purchased, downloaded, installed and at long last, they’re working.

There are hoards of other people with PS3’s that bought the map packs and later found out they couldn’t play them. Hopefully, this will prove useful to you. For Sony to build the PS3 and not enable backward compatibility….argh!!! What are you people taking lessons from Microsoft now?

So basically, I plugged in my iPod for the umpteenth time and was able to download the map packs. Heard a bunch of non-technical silliness on how to fix this problem, but in the end I just plugged the iPod into USB slot #1. I highly doubt it makes a difference which slot you plug it into, but as this was a cause for concern on the message boards I figured I’d share my week long battle against the PlayStation.

I’ve heard that others were able to get the packs working on their PSPs and certain types of Memory Sticks. Anyway, reading through the non-technical posts on the forums is fun. You can find suggestions not far off from a voodoo dance to get the map packs working, or introducing your PS3 to a bucket of water. I can assure you none of those will work, but they’d be worth a video on YouTube.

I have to say, I’m pretty miffed that some of the newer PS3’s apparently have no problem playing the packs, but the older ones like mine still contain a hard drive that’s good for use as a hockey puck so far at least. The first thing you’d think Sony would do is support the old PS2 games before they get a zillion PS3 titles out and the price of the PS3 itself comes down to less than a month’s rent.

  1. Used PS3 Console

I am in the market for buying a PS3. However in the UK they have dumped the backward compatability with the PS2 for a cheaper sell price of the console. I too love playing SOCOM but unfortunately, I have to go to Ebay and try and find the older version PS3 with 60gb hard drive to play it. These are going for about 50% more than a standard new PS3. I think I am going to wait for a SP3 SOCOM

I hear ya, thats the PS3 I have, the 60 gig. And it was a nightmare trying to play most PS2 games on it, especially Socom CA because I couldn’t get the map packs saved to the HD.

I ended up having to save them to my iPod, and now they work…..more or less.
